Introduction
Quelle Chance! Peaceful
aliens from the planet Ouronthop have landed on our
planet with the intention of making friends and learning more about the human
race. They have asked that each
country send delegates to their planet to teach them about what makes each
country on planet Earth special. You
have been chosen to be the delegates for France.
With the extremely useful tool called the internet (you may have heard of it
before) you have the opportunity to go back in time and see what made France
the country it is today. Even more
exciting, you are going to use this on-line “time machine” to
take our new friends on a time traveling adventure throughout French history
and civilization.
Task
You have the task of showing aliens from another planet
what France is
all about. You need to give them an
overview of France’s
history. You have been divided into
groups that will present information from one of the following time
periods: Roman Gaul, Medieval France,
the Renaissance, the Grand Siecle, Enlightenment and the Revolution, the
Napoleonic Era, The Belle Époque, Avant-Garde France, and Modern France. Your group will have classroom
opportunities throughout the year to research, plan, and prepare and your
hard work will culminate with a 20 minute presentation to the Ouronthop race.
Process
To
accomplish your task, you will need to do the following things:
1. Decide
which time period your group will present.
2. Decide
what topic each person in your group will be in charge of researching and
planning. These will include
government and political history, art and architecture, music and
entertainment, and literature and philosophy, and science.
3. Begin
your internet research. The following
sites will help you. Remember to take
notes and be ready to cite your information.

4. Create
a group notebook in which you will include written reports on each topic,
pictures, samples of poetry and literature, and whatever else you need to
show what your time period was all about.
There should be a title page on the outside of the book. This will count as a time-capsule of sorts.
5. Prepare
your presentation. Present the
information in a way that is exciting and professional. Each student will be
individually responsible for his/her topic, but can enlist the help of the
group for things like music or dramatic performances. You can dress up in the costuming of the
period or dress up as a famous person.
Use visual, audio, or audio/visual aids as needed. The sky is the limit!
6. Make
a quiz to give the class and provide an answer sheet for quick grading.
Evaluation
You
will receive a group and individual grade.

Conclusion
Unfortunately,
aliens from outer space are not the only ones unfamiliar with the history and
culture of this planet. Many people
never make an effort to learn about other people and cultures and might as
well be aliens. To truly have an
understanding about the human race as a whole, you need to know where it has
been and where it is going. France is
only the start.
