Introduction

Your mother has terminal cancer and she spends the morning in excruciating pain.  She spends two hours on chemotherapy treatment that she knows will do her as much harm as good.  The rest of her evening is spent in pain as well as nausea and vomiting from the chemotherapy treatment.  For the entire day, she has had one glass of water and one slice of bread to eat that she threw up right before she went to bed.  Is this the way she should continue living?  She wishes to die.  Do you think euthanasia (assisted death) is justified in certain patients?

Task

You will be assigned to a group of three.  The group will take a position on this topic.  The group will research the topic by using various resources, such as: the Internet, periodicals, personal interviews, etc. to support your position.  The group will then prepare a written report to be submitted to USA Today and an oral presentation presented in class.  The group will have two weeks to complete the entire process.

Process

First, the group will decide what position they will take on this topic.  A complete understanding of what the euthanasia process is must be derived and explained in the report.

The group will then research the topic to support their position.  The medical, legal, and ethical aspects of this process must be included in your report.  Each student in the group must select one of the stated aspects to be researched individually.

The group will then proceed to explain in their report what impact does your position have on society.  What impact does your position have on various groups or organizations, such as, the Medical Profession, Legal Systems, Pro-life groups, Pro-choice groups and the terminally ill population?

The group will then compile a complete written report with research references.  Other references, such as, statistics, charts, and graphics are a plus.  In addition, the group will equally divide the oral presentation.

Conclusion

Euthanasia (assisted death) is a controversial ethical issue and also a perplexing legal issue with effects not only in the home, but also in the hospital and the courtroom.  By the end of this project, you should have decided what your feelings are based not only on your beliefs alone but also solid informative evidence.  Hopefully, you will never have to be faced with the decision to end your own life.  Now, you will know what to tell someone when they say to you, “Help me die!”
