Introduction

It has been 100 years since the total and complete destruction of planet Earth.  A group of humans who managed to escape have established a civilization on Mars.  You have been hired to work at the Intergalactic Department of Recreation.  The latest trend in travel is to take virtual trips to the biomes of Earth, no longer in existence.  Your job at the I.D.R. is to create realistic trips for the citizens of Mars, who, obviously, have never been to Earth before.

Task

Take the citizens of Mars on a virtual trip to your biome!

Process

1.      You will be put into groups of five to work as a team for the Intergalactic Department of Recreation.

2.      Your IDR work group will be assigned one of these five biomes:  tropical rainforest, coniferous forest, desert, tundra, and grassland.

3.      Within biome work group, you will be assigned one of the following job titles:  Travel Agent, Biologist, Meteorologist, Geologist, or Tour Guide.

4.      At the completion of six weeks, your work group will take the citizens of Mars on a virtual trip to your biome.

Travel Agent:

Create a travel brochure for your biome using Microsoft Publisher.

·          Combine facts from the geologist, meteorologist, and biologist on the biome to include in a travel brochure.  Select information that would be necessary for tourists to know.  Remember, they have never been to earth before.

·          Assess the elements of the biome that would make it appealing as a vacation spot.

·          Include descriptions of sights and wildlife that would make good “tourist attractions”.

·          Invent a new, outdoor sport that is suitable for your biome and include it as a part of your brochure to attract visitors.

·          Convince tourists that your biome is a hot spot to visit.

·          Based on the weather patterns of your biome, formulate a chart of in-season and off-season dates.

·          Prepare a map of the biome to include in the brochure.

Geologist, Meteorologist, and Biologist

Create a life-size setting that reflects your biome.

* Each team member must save his or her collected data in a folder for future reference.  The teacher will evaluate this folder at various times throughout this project.

1.      The geologist will gather information about the characteristics of landforms that define your biome.  Include data about location, elevation, soil content etc.

2.      The meteorologist will research the climate of the biome.  Incorporate average temperature readings for an entire year, yearly rainfall amounts, weather conditions at various elevations and seasonal weather patterns.

3.      The biologist will identify animals and plants native to the biome.  You must gather data and pictures dealing with specific characteristics of the plants and animals that will be incorporated in the model.  Explain how their specific environment influenced specific adaptations by both animals and plants.

4.      The geologist, meteorologist, and biologist must make use of their talents in researching to recreate a life-size model of their biome.

§          Recreate the landform by using butcher paper or cardboard boxes

§          Create replicas of at least six to eight animals

§          Use plants/vegetation as background scenery

§          Simulate actual weather conditions using mist, fans, heaters, etc.

§          Incorporate sound effects

Tour Guide

Guide the citizens on the tour of the biome.

·          Compose a dialogue that will hook your audience into taking the biome journey.

·          Explain your biome including: weather – animal and plant life. Connect the meteorologist’s findings in the presentation.

·          Prepare a survival–kit based on the environment. Plan with the biologist.

·          Compare and/or contrast earth’s biome to Mar’s biome. Support your findings with the geologist.

Conclusion

Virtually, this exercise will provide you with an immense amount of ideas and knowledge in which your students can baste in wonderment and creativity learning about the biomes. There are many biomes to explore and conquer!
