Introduction
What can you do all by yourself? What
are some of your favorite things? With this activity, you and your classmates
will be learning different things a certain “critter” can do and creating
your own “critter.” Task
After the teacher reads the
book All By Myself by Mercer Mayer, you will
learn about the Little Critter character in the
story. You will participate in a
whole class character web. You
will then use what you have learned to create your own character that will
represent yourself. You will
also create a web of your character’s favorite things. The character web should include your
favorite:
v
Friend
v
Pet
v
Hobby
v
Sport
v
Book
Your character will be
created in a drawing and then in a 3-dimensional display using
PlayDough. The character webs
will be created using Kidspiration software.
Process
q
Step 1: The teacher begins by reading the story All By Myself by Mercer Mayer to the class. As a whole class, the teacher will
demonstrate using the Internet to research the Little
Critter character used in Mercer Mayer’s
stories. Read about Litter Critter to discover his favorite: friends, pets, hobbies, sports, and
books.
q
Step 2: After reading about Little Critter, the whole class will work collaboratively to create
a character web of Little
Critter’s
favorite things using Kidspiration software. In the character web include Little Critter’s favorite: friends, pets, hobbies, sports, and books.
q
Step 3:
Get a sheet of construction paper and draw a picture of a fictional character
that you would like to create.
Give your character a name.
Using sound spelling, make a list of your characters favorite: friend, pet, hobby, sport, and book
on the back of your construction paper.
q
Step 4: Now that you have created
your fictional character, use PlayDough to create a 3-dimensional display of
your character. Write your
character’s name on an index card.
q
Step 5: Use the Kidspiration software to create a web of your
character’s favorite things. Be
sure to include your character’s name and the following favorites: friend, pet, hobby, sport, and
book. After creating your web,
print a copy to display with your character.
q
Step 6: Make a class exhibit on a table in
the library to display each child’s creation. Be sure to include the PlayDough character, the
character’s name, and the character web.
Evaluation
You will be evaluated on your individual participation in the
following rubric.
