*Introduction:

October is the month for spiders!  Even children who are afraid of these wonderful bugs are captivated by pictures and stories about spiders, from The Very Busy Spider to everyone's favorite finger play, "The Itsy Bitsy Spider."

*Task:

I begin my spider unit by reading The Itsy Bitsy Spider.  After the song and book, I make a Language Experience / KWL chart about spiders, listing the facts my students know and also the things they'd like to learn.  We also make a graph ... Are You Afraid of Spiders?

K/W/L chart:

Sing the song: “The Itsy Bitsy Spider”

Build a spider with food items.

Marshmallow Spiders

For each spider, use one large marshmallow for the body and one small marshmallow for the head (attach with 1/2 a toothpick).  Make eyes from mini M&Ms, legs from 8 pretzel sticks.  Cover with chocolate sauce, if desired.

*Process:

Step 1: The teacher begins by reading the story, “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” to the class.  As a whole class, the teacher will demonstrate using the internet and looking up sites about spiders.

Step 2: After reading about the Itsy Bitsy Spider, the whole class will work together on a KWL chart.

Step 3: As a class, we will learn the words to the song, “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” by Dr. Jean.

Step 4: The class will construct a spider marshmallow.

Step 5: Woven Paper Plate Webs Using a paper plate, either punch holes around the plate or make slits around the plate - slits are easier for younger children. Then I give them some yarn and they weave back and forth and make a spider web.  If you punched holes, it's helpful to put some scotch tape on one end - making it easier for them to put the yarn thru the holes.     Afterwards, I give them each a spider ring to put in their web.

Step 6: Make a class exhibit in the library to display each child’s creation.

*Evaluation:

Happy Face with Eyes, Nose, Mouth = Complete work, very neat, has everything it needs.

Happy Face with Eyes, Mouth = Almost complete work, neat, missing a few things.

Face with Eyes = Not complete work, messy, missing many things.

Empty Circle = Oh no! Missing everything, very messy.

*Conclusion:

SPIDER WEB: In an enclosed area, take numerous, separate and very long pieces of yarn to create a giant spider web. Put a piece of tape on the beginning of each piece and tie a number to the end. Criss-cross the pieces of yarn throughout the room to create a "web." Each child grabs a taped end of yarn and rolls it up until the end is found. Each number corresponds to a special prize or treat. The kids will have fun working there way through the web and trying to stay untangled
